Local SEO for Small Businesses: What Moves the Needle in Google Maps

Company profile, reviews, local pages and the things that don't move the needle on Google Maps.
The question usually goes like this: "what do I need to do to appear first on the map when someone searches for my service in town?"
The short answer is that no one can guarantee your position, because the results vary depending on where the person searching is located. Someone from the other side of town sees something different from someone on your street. This changes how we set our expectations from the start.
What we can influence is less spectacular and quite concrete.
Business Profile
The correctly chosen main category is the most important setting and the most frequently wrong. A service centre that mainly dealt with gearboxes had put "car repairs," general. We changed the main category and listed the rest as secondary.
Real opening hours, updated even for holidays. Services listed individually, not in a long description. Photos added constantly, not 30 in one day and then nothing for a year. Service area, defined realistically.
We use the posts from the profile, but we don't promise much from them. The effect is hard to isolate and I can't promise anything measurable from them; it depends on the niche and how consistently you post.
What we do with reviews
The number, average, how recent they are and whether you respond all matter. What works for our clients: the request made on the spot, by the person who delivered the service, with a short link sent via WhatsApp. Not an automated email two weeks later.
What we don't do: we don't buy reviews, we don't write reviews ourselves, we don't recommend "review exchange" schemes. It's a good way to lose the profile.
We also respond to negative ones, briefly and without lengthy justifications. The reader doesn't evaluate the incident, they evaluate how you react.
Website Pages
A page for the service + locality combination, but only where you actually have activity. We made the mistake of generating pages for ten neighbouring communes, with almost identical text and just the name changed. They brought nothing and made the site harder to manage.
What works: a page for a real locality, with work done there, with photos from there, with details you can't copy — travel time, neighbourhoods, specific characteristics.
Signals from outside the site
Identical business data in all important directories, especially the name, address, and phone number. Mentions on local sites — associations, local press, partners. Not directories bought in bulk.
How long until you see results
For small businesses, with average competition, the first changes in visibility are usually seen within a few weeks for the profile and reviews, and more slowly for organic positions. I won't give an exact timeframe; it depends on how old the site is and who else is working in parallel in the area.
What's seen quickly and is easy to check: how many people call directly from the profile and how many ask for driving directions. These are the figures we look at monthly.
If you want, we'll look at your profile and tell you the first three things to change.
What we look at in the business profile, point by point
The Google Business Profile is where we see the most quick wins for small businesses, precisely because it's often only half-completed.
| Element | Common mistake | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Main category | Too general or wrong | We match it to the service that brings in money |
| Service area | Missing or exaggerated | We put the localities we actually reach |
| Opening hours | Not updated for holidays | We set it up and re-check it |
| Photos | Three photos from opening day | Recent photos, from work or local area |
| Listed services | Empty | We list them, with short descriptions |
| Q&A | Ignored | We answer the real ones |
The main category is the change that has most often moved things for our clients. We cannot promise the same effect for everyone.
Reviews, no shortcuts
We don't buy reviews and we don't recommend it to anyone, no matter how much it might speed things up. What works, albeit slower: we ask the client to ask directly, at the end of the job, and we give them a short link they can send via WhatsApp. We respond to all reviews, including negative ones, briefly and without lengthy justifications.
A three-star review with a calm response helps more than ten five-star reviews with nothing written.
What we do on the site for the local part
A page for a locality only if we have something to write about it: work done there, specific conditions, travel times. Ten identical pages with just the city name changed don't help, and for one client, we ended up removing them after someone else had created them.
How long until you see results
Usually faster than classic SEO, because the map reacts to the profile and reviews. But it depends on how crowded the city is for that particular niche. In Sibiu, we saw movement in a few weeks; in Bucharest, for crowded niches, much slower.
